Is 5G OTA testing too complicated? — Try using simulation tools to help.
2022-01-10
In recent years, as smart products have proliferated and competition has intensified, many manufacturers of end‑user devices have been raising their performance benchmarks. In addition to conducted‑emission testing, they are now also imposing OTA‑performance requirements on their own products.
This article will share relevant information on OTA testing in the 5G era. The main outline of the article is as follows:
01. What is OTA testing?
02. Key Measurement Metrics for OTA
03. The advent of 5G has brought new challenges to OTA testing.
04. In the 5G era, how to easily tackle OTA testing challenges
05. Procedure for Performing OTA Simulation Using SystemVue Software
06. OTA Simulation Case Studies

What is OTA testing?
As the name suggests, OTA testing simulates the scenario in which a product’s wireless signals propagate through the air, with the device under test connected to the test system via its transmit or receive antenna port.
OTA testing can account for factors such as internal radiated emissions, product structure, antenna characteristics, and the transceiver algorithms of RF chips, making it a testing approach that closely mirrors real-world usage scenarios.
Let’s take the earliest 3G UE SISO OTA test as an example to understand the most basic environment required for OTA testing:
Anechoic chamber, turntable (for controlling UE rotation)
Probe antenna (receives UE radiated signals at a fixed location)
A wireless test platform used to generate virtual base station signals for probe antennas (e.g., the Keysight UXM series, not shown in the figure).
During the measurement process, the UE antenna’s radiation characteristics in different directions are controlled and measured by rotating the turntable.
